Our Mission

Anthology Productions Portland produces bold, enduring theatrical work that inspires awe, ignites curiosity, and strengthens the performing arts ecosystem through uncompromising craft and long-term stewardship.

Our Vision

A performing arts culture where excellence is expected, artists are supported with time and stability, and audiences engage deeply with work that lasts.

Our Values

Excellence – Craft is a responsibility to artists, audiences, and community.

Stability – We reject crisis-driven models in favor of long-term planning.

Depth Over Speed – Meaningful work requires time and rigor.

Stewardship – Resources are long-term investments, not short-term fuel.

Audience Trust – Audiences deserve work that respects intelligence and curiosity.

Founder's Letter

Anthology Productions Portland was founded from a simple belief: audiences deserve regular access to theatrical work of the highest caliber, work that is ambitious, beautifully crafted, and welcoming to a broad public.

Portland is home to an extraordinary range of theatrical voices, from devised work and new writing to highly specific aesthetics and forms. Anthology exists to complement that landscape by focusing on rigorously curated, high-end, mainstream theatre produced with care, scale, and intention. Our aim is not to replace what already thrives here, but to offer a distinct and necessary counterpoint: work that is artistically serious, emotionally resonant, and accessible to a wide audience.

We are committed to creating theatre that inspires excitement for new theatre-goers and a deeply satisfying experience for those who already attend. By prioritizing excellence in production, Anthology seeks to build trust in what live theatre can offer and to cultivate audiences eager to engage more fully with Portland's cultural life.

Just as importantly, we believe that high standards should not be reserved only for those who can afford touring-house prices or out-of-town travel. Anthology was created to offer a compelling local alternative: work that reflects the ambition and polish audiences expect from major markets, produced here with artists who are supported with time and resources.

To support this vision, Anthology is structured differently.

We do not produce by season, nor do we chase external timelines. Instead, we produce in cycles. Each Anthology cycle represents a complete artistic chapter—defined not by quotas or formats, but by intention and coherence. The scope of each cycle may differ, responding to the needs of the work rather than a predetermined template.

Works within a cycle are announced by intent rather than by date and are developed, financed, and produced to completion without artificial deadlines. Only when a cycle has fully reached the stage do we announce the next. This approach allows each body of work to resonate on its own terms, while preserving continuity and focus across Anthology's long-term artistic life.

This model allows us to remove unnecessary urgency from decision-making and replace it with discipline. It protects the work, the artists, and the organization itself. It also allows us to plan responsibly, compensate artists fairly, and invest resources where they matter most: production quality, thoughtful marketing, and meaningful audience engagement.

Anthology's long-term sustainability is supported by an endowment-centered approach, designed to reduce reliance on crisis-driven fundraising and short-term survival strategies. Stability, in this context, is not a constraint, it is a creative asset. It creates the conditions for deeper artistic work, stronger partnerships, and long-term trust with audiences and supporters alike.

My hope is that Anthology not only produces exceptional theatre, but also contributes to a stronger and more engaged cultural ecosystem in Portland, one where excellence is expected.
